Gervais: the TownThe first time I went abroad, I travelled to a little town high in the French Alps, and by a most amazing coincidence this town was called: St. Gervais-les-BainsSitting at the mount of a closed valley, St. Gervais-les-Bains is a small ski town just around the corner from the famous Chamonix. Turn away from Mont Blanc and keep it on your left as you head towards Switzerland, but at the mouth of the Chamonix Valley leave the Autoroute Blanche and instead head for Le Fayet - this is the gateway to St. Gervais-les-Bains. Le Fayet is part of the community of St. Gervais-les-Bains and holds its Thermal Baths, its Railway Station (where TGV trains from Paris call), and is the gateway to the main town itself. Climb steeply from Le Fayet and you will soon enter the small town of St Gervais along with all the traffic that thunders onward to Megeve. But St. Gervais-les-Bains is mostly quiet and sits happily in the valley when the Megeve traffic is turned away to head over the next hill. Only the small town of Les Contamines is beyond St. Gervais-les-Bains because this valley ends in mountains that separate these pretty mountain towns from Italy. |
